Alabama Driver's License

F-1 Students may apply for a Alabama Driver's License to use while here in the United States. There are some important things to note about the Driver's License application process; please review the following information below. Should you have any additional questions about applying for a Alabama Driver's License, please contact the Office of International Programs. 
 
For most international students, you may not have a Social Security Number (SSN). However, as part of the Alabama Driver's License application, you will be asked to provide a Rejection Letter from the Social Security Administration (SSA) instead of a Social Security Number (SSN).

To receive a Rejection Letter from the Social Security Administration, please take the following documents with you to a Social Security Office.
   - Your passport, which contains the visa stamp, and Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record;
   - Your most current UWA Form I-20;
   - Application from for a Social Security Card: Form SS-5.

Once submission of the documents, you will receive a Form SSA-L676-Refusal to Process SSN, the Social Security Denial Letter. For location information for the closet Social Security offices to campus, please see below:

Here are some helpful reminders when you are applying for an Alabama Driver's License:
   1.) Study for the Knowledge Test. There is a fee of $5.00, no checks accepted. You can find the online driver manual here.
   2.) You must take the following documentation with you when you take both the Knowledge Test & Road Test:
             - Passport with Visa Stamp;
             - Most recent Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record;
             - Most current UWA Form I-20;
             - Rejection (Denial) Letter from Social Security (or Social Security card if you have one);
             - Certified Document of Verification that you are a full time student enrolled at UWA: You may receive this document
               at Webb 321, Registrar’s Office. It can be dated no more than 30 days before the date of the test.);
             - $28.50 CASH for knowledge test and driver’s license and photo.
